Sebastian Fire Testing: Leading the Future of Safe & Sustainable Materials

Sebastian Fire Testing was established as a direct outcome of the Cooperative Research Centres Projects (CRCP) initiative (2020–2024), in collaboration with RMIT University and the University of Melbourne. This initiative addressed critical safety and environmental challenges in the built environment, particularly the cladding crisis, fire compliance gaps, and the responsible upcycling of co-mingled construction waste.

With the mission to become Australia’s premier fire testing and material validation facility, Sebastian Fire Testing is committed to ensuring that the built environment is not only safer and compliant but also aligned with sustainability and circular economy principles.

Material Fire Testing Services

Non-Combustibility Testing

Determines a material’s resistance to ignition and sustained burning, ensuring compliance with fire safety standards.

Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC)

Measures heat flow and thermal transitions, providing insights into melting points, glass transitions, and thermal stability.

U

Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA)

Evaluates material decomposition, weight loss, and thermal stability under controlled temperature conditions.

Bomb Calorimetry

Determines the heat of combustion by measuring the energy released during complete oxidation of a material. This analysis is essential for evaluating energy content, fuel efficiency, and material performance

Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR)

Professional evaluations of evacuation procedures, signage, and emergency response plans to ensure your property meets safety compliance standards.

A Response to Industry Challenges

The ACP cladding crisis and broader concerns over material safety, recyclability, and fire compliance highlighted the need for rigorous material validation. The CRCP project tackled these challenges by:

  • Developing safer, upcycled building materials through advanced materials testing
  • Enhancing fire compliance standards to meet Australian and international safety benchmarks
  • Reducing construction waste by transforming non-compliant materials into reusable alternatives
Providing sustainable, fire-resistant solutions for the building industry

Sebastian Fire Testing was launched to carry forward these innovations, ensuring that materials used in the built environment meet the highest safety, performance, and sustainability standards.

Advancing the Circular Economy in the Built Environment

Sebastian Fire Testing plays a pivotal role in materials validation, ensuring that upcycled and new materials comply with flammability, chemical, thermal, and mechanical safety standards. This approach drives circular economy adoption, reduces waste in construction, and supports Net Zero initiatives by allowing developers and Facilities Managers to choose responsible, fire-safe materials.
